NEW DELHI: In a major push towards strengthening maternal and child healthcare services, the Union Health Ministry has launched a new digital platform, JANANI — Journey of Antenatal, Natal and Neonatal Integrated Care — aimed at ensuring continuous monitoring and integrated healthcare support for women and children across the country.
The platform was unveiled at the recently held National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity – Best Practices Shaping India’s Health Future.
JANANI has been developed as an upgraded and more comprehensive version of the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal. The service-oriented digital platform is designed to maintain longitudinal health records of women during their reproductive years by digitally capturing key healthcare events across the continuum of care.
Officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen tracking and delivery of services related to antenatal care, childbirth, postnatal care, newborn health, immunisation, family planning and home-based care for mothers and children.
The platform seeks to address long-standing gaps in continuity of care by enabling real-time monitoring and timely interventions, particularly for high-risk pregnancies and vulnerable populations.
One of the key features of JANANI is the introduction of QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health (MCH) cards, which will allow easy portability and access to health records. The digital system is expected to reduce duplication of records and improve healthcare access for migratory populations.
The platform also includes automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, due-list generation for scheduled services, and real-time dashboards for supervisors and healthcare administrators. These features are expected to improve follow-up, monitoring and targeted healthcare interventions.
According to the Ministry, JANANI has been designed with interoperability features that allow integration with major national health and nutrition platforms such as U-WIN and POSHAN Abhiyaan. This integration is expected to improve coordination between programmes and enable comprehensive tracking of beneficiaries across sectors.
Beneficiaries can register on the platform using multiple identifiers, including ABHA ID, Aadhaar authentication through OTP or biometrics, and mobile numbers. A pan-India search facility has also been incorporated to ensure continuity of healthcare services regardless of migration or change in location.
In addition, JANANI allows self-registration through web and mobile-based platforms, enabling women and families to directly access and engage with healthcare services.
Health officials said the platform will help citizens keep track of antenatal check-ups, immunisation schedules and critical maternal and child healthcare milestones through alerts and reminders. It will also provide information regarding nearby healthcare facilities, expected place of delivery, nutrition guidance and health education.
The Ministry said the platform represents a structural reform in maternal and child healthcare administration by combining digital authentication, real-time monitoring and inter-sectoral convergence.
Early implementation figures indicate substantial uptake of the platform. According to official data, JANANI has so far recorded more than 1.34 crore beneficiary registrations, including over 30 lakh registrations of pregnant women. More than 30 lakh digital Mother and Child Health cards have already been generated, while over one lakh biometric verifications have been completed.
Public health experts have long emphasised the need for robust digital tracking systems to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths, especially in rural and underserved areas where continuity of care often remains fragmented.
