NEW DELHI: Sowa-Rigpa, the traditional system of medicine practised in the Himalayan region, has received renewed recognition, with Dr Padma Gurmet, Director of the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR), Leh, being honoured with the ‘Wellness Visionary Award’ for Holistic Healing.
The award was presented by Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), Kanpur, during its third International Conference on Wellness, held from October 30 to November 1. A total of 42 health professionals from across the country were recognised for their contributions.
Dr Gurmet also delivered a lecture on the significance of Sowa-Rigpa in promoting health and wellness in the Himalayan regions, drawing attention to the traditional system’s principles, theories and practices.
The conference provided a platform to discuss the contribution of traditional medicine to holistic healthcare, with participants showing interest in understanding Sowa-Rigpa and its potential role in addressing health and wellness needs in mountain communities.
The recognition comes amid growing interest in traditional systems of medicine. However, wider acceptance of such systems will also depend on building scientific evidence on their safety, efficacy and clinical relevance.
