The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken action after receiving complaints from residents of Lagacharla village in Vikarabad district, Telangana, alleging police harassment, physical abuse, and false criminal charges. The NHRC recently issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Telangana, asking for a detailed report within two weeks.
The complaint, if true, suggests a serious violation of human rights, and the NHRC has expressed concern over the situation. The report is expected to cover the status of FIRs, those in judicial custody, and villagers who are reportedly hiding in the forest due to fear, without basic necessities.
Media reports indicate that the alleged incidents occurred after villagers protested the state’s land acquisition for a proposed “Pharma Village,” which they claim was done improperly. Most of the victims are reportedly from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Communities. The complaint was submitted by at least 12 victims, who are seeking intervention from the NHRC to protect them from starvation.
The NHRC has also asked whether the women victims received medical examinations and care for their injuries. Given the seriousness of the allegations, the Commission has decided to send a joint team of officers for an on-the-spot investigation, with a report expected within a week.
According to media reports, on November 11, 2024, the District Collector and officials arrived in the village to announce the land acquisition. Later that evening, hundreds of police, along with local goons, allegedly raided the village, assaulting the protesters, including pregnant women. The NHRC stated that internet and electricity services were cut off to prevent communication, and false FIRs were allegedly filed against the villagers. Some victims were forced to flee their homes and seek shelter in forests, with no access to food, medical aid, or other basic needs.
