New Delhi: Marking a significant milestone in cancer care for North Bihar, the Alkem Foundation, the CSR arm of Alkem Laboratories Ltd., has supported setting up of the Samprada Singh Memorial Radiotherapy Centre at the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Muzaffarpur in the State.
With an investment of Rs 100 crore, this centre is now the largest radiotherapy facility in North Bihar and ranks as the second-largest in the entire state.
Bihar, facing a rising cancer burden, has long struggled with inadequate cancer care infrastructure. The newly inaugurated centre — named in honour of the late Samprada Singh, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Alkem — and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to bridge this critical healthcare gap.
Developed in collaboration with the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai — a premier national institution for cancer treatment and research — the centre is set to provide advanced care close to the homes of thousands of patients.
Madhurima Singh, Executive Director and Chairperson of the CSR and Sustainability Committee at Alkem, said, “Being deeply connected to Bihar, we are committed to giving back to the state. The growing number of cancer cases calls for world-class treatment facilities that are accessible locally. This centre embodies our vision of equitable healthcare access and strives to support patients and families through comprehensive care.”
Equipped with cutting-edge technology such as Linear Accelerators (LINAC), stereotaxy systems, CT simulators, organ motion management tools, and in-house brachytherapy with dedicated applicators, the centre can treat between 3,500 and 4,000 patients annually. It will cater to Bihar as well as neighbouring regions like Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and border areas of Nepal.
Dr. Kumar Prabhash, Director of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, remarked, “This facility enables us to deliver a full range of cancer care services — from diagnosis to treatment — meeting global standards. Our goal is to provide ethical, affordable, and evidence-based care for people in Bihar and surrounding states.”
Beyond advanced radiotherapy, the Alkem Foundation, in partnership with TMC, is also undertaking community outreach initiatives, including home-based palliative care, cancer screening camps, and awareness programmes focused on early detection and prevention.
