New Delhi: The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD) Wednesday on December 3 with a series of inclusive programmes aimed at promoting accessibility, awareness and dignity for persons with disabilities.

The day-long event featured two street plays staged by resident doctors and BPO students, underlining themes of empathy, social inclusion and the need to remove everyday barriers faced by persons with disabilities.

A spirited walkathon led by Divyang participants set an inspiring tone, showcasing resilience and determination, the hospital said in a statement.

To engage young medical and nursing trainees, the PMR Department organised a poster-making competition, a quiz, and a poetry contest—each designed to foster sensitivity and deeper understanding of disability rights and inclusion.

As part of its outreach efforts, the hospital also distributed wheelchairs to beneficiaries, reinforcing its commitment to improving accessibility for patients who require mobility support. The programme additionally included the felicitation of ‘Saksham – Ek Abhiyaan’ NGO for its sustained work in disability advocacy and support.

Addressing the gathering, Director Dr. Sandeep Bansal commended the coordinated efforts of faculty, staff and students in advancing an inclusive vision for healthcare institutions. Medical Superintendent Dr. Charu Bamba highlighted ongoing initiatives to strengthen patient-centred accessibility across the hospital. Head of PMR, Dr. Ajay Gupta, emphasised the importance of community participation and awareness-building in safeguarding disability rights.

The event was attended by Addl. MS Dr. R.P. Saini, DDA (MR) Ashok Pal, PMR faculty members, staff, and numerous persons with disabilities. VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to promoting equity, dignity and expanded opportunities for persons with disabilities, added the statement.
