NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, a 41-km-long North–South corridor aimed at strengthening urban mobility in Rajasthan’s capital.
The project, estimated at Rs13,037.66 crore, will be implemented by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited, a 50:50 joint venture between the Centre and the State government. It will run from Prahladpura to Todi Mod and include 36 stations.
According to an official release, the corridor is designed to provide seamless connectivity to key activity hubs such as Sitapura Industrial Area, VKIA, Jaipur Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari and Vidhyadhar Nagar. The alignment includes underground stations in the airport area and will be integrated with the existing Phase-1 corridor through interchanges and feeder systems.
Jaipur Metro’s Phase-1, which currently operates on an 11.64-km East–West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, records an average daily ridership of about 60,000 passengers. With the addition of Phase-2, officials expect a significant rise in ridership and a corresponding increase in the share of public transport in the city.
The project has undergone multiple layers of appraisal, including Inter-Ministerial consultations and evaluation by the Public Investment Board. It has an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) exceeding 14%, indicating strong socio-economic viability.
Funding for the project will be structured through equity contributions from the Centre and the Rajasthan government, along with subordinate debt and multilateral financing, in line with the Metro Rail Policy, 2017.
Officials said the project is aligned with the Rajasthan Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Policy-2025 and broader national goals for sustainable urban transport. Once operational, it is expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower vehicular emissions and improve overall connectivity for residents, workers and tourists.
Targeted for completion by September 2031, the Phase-2 corridor will complement the existing metro network and extend connectivity across Jaipur, including its residential areas, commercial hubs and the heritage walled city.
The expansion is expected to play a key role in transforming Jaipur into a more accessible and environmentally sustainable urban centre, while supporting the broader vision of a “Viksit Bharat” and “Viksit Rajasthan.”
