NEW DELHI: In a significant step towards strengthening specialised vascular care in India, Apollo Hospitals has launched a dedicated Centre for Venous Disorders at its flagship facility in Chennai. The centre aims to provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and long-term management for a range of venous diseases that are increasingly being recognised as a major public health concern.

Venous disorders, often dismissed as minor cosmetic problems, affect millions of people worldwide and can severely impair mobility, productivity and quality of life if left untreated. Medical experts say conditions such as varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), chronic venous insufficiency and venous ulcers are becoming more common due to sedentary lifestyles, obesity, prolonged standing at workplaces, ageing, diabetes and lack of awareness regarding early symptoms.

The newly launched centre brings together specialists from vascular surgery, interventional radiology, dermatology and wound care under one roof. The integrated approach is expected to help patients receive faster diagnosis and timely intervention without having to visit multiple departments.

According to doctors, venous disorders occur when veins — particularly in the legs — fail to efficiently return blood to the heart. In varicose veins, weakened or damaged valves inside the veins lead to pooling of blood, causing enlarged, twisted veins accompanied by pain, swelling, heaviness and skin discoloration. In more advanced cases, patients may develop non-healing venous ulcers, bleeding or infections.

Deep vein thrombosis, considered one of the most dangerous venous conditions, involves the formation of blood clots in deep veins, usually in the legs. If a clot dislodges and travels to the lungs, it can result in pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening emergency. Doctors note that prolonged bed rest, long-distance travel, surgery, smoking and certain chronic illnesses can significantly increase the risk of DVT.

The centre is equipped with advanced imaging systems and minimally invasive treatment technologies, including laser and endovenous therapies, aimed at reducing hospital stay and ensuring quicker recovery. Services offered include early screening, risk assessment, same-day diagnostics, minimally invasive procedures, wound and ulcer care, and lifestyle counselling to prevent recurrence.

Dr Ilankumaran Kaliamoorthy, CEO, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai Region, said, “With the launch of the Centre for Venous Disorders, we have made significant progress in tackling a group of disorders which often go undiagnosed and inadequately treated. With our multidisciplinary approach and advanced technology, we aim to provide our patients with timely, efficient and minimally invasive treatment, thereby improving quality of life and long-term outcomes.”

Dr Balaji, senior consultant & vascular surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai said, “While many venous disorders are considered merely cosmetic in nature, in fact, they have a great impact on mobility and overall well-being if not treated promptly. Diagnosis is key here, as is intervention. Through this centre, we are able to provide treatment that is precise, minimal invasive treatment that results in quick recovery and lasting results.”

Dr Rajarajan Venkatesan, senior consultant & vascular surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road Chennai, added, “Many patients have complications like ulcers or blood clots (thrombosis) that could have been prevented if they had come earlier. Our approach is not only about treating the condition, but on comprehensive evaluation, risk assessment, and long-term management of the condition so it does not recur.”
