Graphic Era Hospital Crosses Milestone of 1,000 Heart Surgeries

DEHRADUN: Graphic Era Hospital has achieved a major milestone in advanced cardiac care with its Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) Department successfully performing more than 1,000 heart surgeries, underscoring the growing capabilities of specialised cardiac treatment facilities in the hilly State Uttarakhand.

Hospital authorities said the department has so far carried out 1,004 surgeries, including complex procedures involving adults, children and newborns. The surgeries comprised 321 coronary artery bypass graft procedures, 177 valve replacement and repair surgeries, 136 simple congenital heart surgeries, 87 complex congenital procedures, 19 aortic surgeries and 264 vascular, thoracic and other major operations.

The achievement, doctors said, reflects the institution’s expanding expertise in handling high-risk cardiac cases using advanced surgical techniques and critical care support systems.

The CTVS team is led by Director of Cardiac Sciences Dr. Akhilesh Pandey and includes Head of Cardiac Anaesthesia Dr. Satya Prakash Gautam, Head of Anaesthesia Dr. Parag Kumar, along with Dr. Pulkit Malhotra, Dr. Anuradha, Dr. Nishi, Thaine Davy, Dhyani Roy, Vinay Kumar, Narendra Singh, Sobha, Ranpreet and Andrew Paul.

Medical Director Dr. Puneet Tyagi said the hospital has increasingly adopted minimally invasive approaches in cardiac surgery, enabling faster recovery and improved outcomes for patients.

He said the department has been treating patients across all age groups, including newborns with complex cardiac conditions. Highlighting one of the most challenging cases handled by the hospital, Dr. Tyagi said surgeons had successfully operated on a two-day-old infant weighing only 1.9 kg, demonstrating the department’s expertise in neonatal cardiac care and complex surgical management.

“The successful handling of such delicate procedures reflects the technological strength, surgical precision and multidisciplinary coordination available at the hospital,” he said.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Jasjit Singh said the hospital has also strengthened its critical care infrastructure through advanced life-support systems such as Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), which provides temporary cardiac and respiratory support to critically ill patients.

He said ECMO facilities have become crucial in managing severe cardiac emergencies and improving survival chances in patients requiring intensive postoperative care.

Doctors noted that cardiac diseases continue to rise rapidly across India due to changing lifestyles, increasing incidence of diabetes and hypertension, and delayed diagnosis. Against this backdrop, the availability of advanced cardiac care facilities within the State has reduced dependence on metropolitan centres for highly specialised treatment.

Hospital officials said the institution is now preparing to introduce next-generation technologies, including robotic minimally invasive cardiac surgery and cardiac transplant services, aimed at expanding access to highly precise and advanced treatment options.
