AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday placed infrastructure development at the core of his visit to Gujarat, inaugurating and laying the foundation for projects worth nearly Rs 20,000 crore in the Vav-Tharad region, with a focus on roads, railways and energy.

Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the projects would accelerate economic activity and improve connectivity across the State. “Development works worth nearly Rs 20,000 crore will strengthen the energy, railway and road sectors, injecting fresh momentum into people’s lives and reinforcing the foundation of a modern Gujarat,” he said.

A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the 109-km Ahmedabad-Dholera Greenfield Expressway, constructed at a cost of over Rs 5,100 crore. The expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve access to the Dholera Special Investment Region, which is being developed as a major industrial and smart city hub.

Officials said the corridor would also enhance logistics efficiency and support industrial growth by linking key economic zones in the State. The project is part of a broader push to strengthen high-speed road connectivity in western India.

The Prime Minister also underlined Gujarat’s leadership in renewable energy, noting that the State has emerged as a frontrunner in solar power generation. He recalled that the foundation for this growth was laid in 2010 with the establishment of an early solar park.

“Today, Gujarat stands as the country’s leading State in solar energy, reflecting a long-term vision for a sustainable future,” he said.

Referring to national security infrastructure, Modi spoke about the Deesa airbase project in North Gujarat, stating that it had remained delayed for years under previous administrations. “The Deesa airbase, crucial for safeguarding the western border, was stuck in files for a long time. After we assumed responsibility, the work was fast-tracked,” he said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted improvements in water availability in North Gujarat, a region historically affected by water scarcity. He said sustained efforts by the government had helped address long-standing challenges and ensure better access to water for local communities.

Emphasising rural connectivity, Modi said that all villages in Gujarat are now linked by quality roads, facilitating mobility and economic activity. He added that the introduction of semi-high-speed trains such as the Vande Bharat Express has further transformed connectivity within the country.

“Driven by people’s trust, this journey of rapid development will continue to gain speed,” he said.

Touching upon global developments, the Prime Minister said India has remained resilient despite challenging international conditions, including conflicts and energy crises. “Many countries have faced sharp increases in fuel prices, but India has managed the situation in a stable manner due to strong policy decisions and national unity,” he said.

In a political remark, Modi criticised the opponent parties, accusing them of engaging in divisive politics. “At such a critical time, the Congress continues to weaken the nation through misinformation and division,” he said.

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister invoked Gujarat’s cultural ethos while linking it to global aspirations. “From ‘Jad Se Judna’ in Gandhinagar to ‘Jagat Se Judna’ in Sanand, Gujarat is demonstrating how India can stay rooted in its traditions while connecting with the world,” he said.
