The Karnataka Government has taken a significant step towards promoting menstrual hygiene by re-launching the Shuchi scheme after a four-year hiatus. This initiative aims to provide sanitary napkins to approximately 19 lakh adolescent girls in government and aided schools and colleges across the state, highlighting the government’s commitment to girls’ health and hygiene.

Under the re-launched scheme, the Karnataka Health Department will directly supply free sanitary napkins to schools, which will then distribute them to girls aged 10 to 18 years. Each kit will contain 10 sanitary napkins, ensuring that girls receive an adequate supply for one year. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao emphasized the importance of the scheme in safeguarding the hygiene and health of girl students, noting that it is particularly beneficial for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The initiative, originally launched by the previous Siddaramaiah-led state government, was stalled under subsequent administrations. Minister Rao expressed bewilderment at the discontinuation of such a vital project and reaffirmed the Congress government’s commitment to its revival.

In addition to providing sanitary napkins, the government is also exploring eco-friendly alternatives such as menstrual cups as part of a pilot program in two districts. Minister Rao highlighted the positive response to this initiative and emphasized the importance of creating awareness about menstrual hygiene practices and debunking associated myths and superstitions.

Furthermore, the Health Minister underscored the naturalness of menstruation and emphasized the need to eliminate stigma surrounding it. He reiterated the importance of cleanliness and scientific management of menstruation for girls’ health and well-being.

In conclusion, the re-launch of the Shuchi scheme underscores the Karnataka Government’s commitment to promoting menstrual hygiene and ensuring the health and dignity of adolescent girls across the state. Through comprehensive initiatives and awareness programs, the government aims to empower girls with the knowledge and resources necessary for their menstrual health and well-being.
