NEW DELHI: India took another step forward in expanding its space capabilities with the successful launch of GSLV-F17 carrying EOS-05, described as the country’s first-ever imaging satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the launch as a major achievement for India’s space programme, highlighting the growing technological capabilities of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the increasing participation of domestic industry in the space sector.

The launch is significant, as it demonstrates India’s ability to deploy an imaging satellite into a geosynchronous orbit, adding another capability to the country’s increasingly diverse space programme.

Congratulating ISRO, Modi said the mission reflected the “excellence, innovation and growing capabilities” of India’s space sector. He also underlined the expanding partnership between ISRO and Indian industry, saying it was giving greater strength and scale to the country’s space programme.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when India’s space ecosystem is increasingly moving beyond government-led missions, with greater participation by private companies and industry in manufacturing, technology development and other parts of the space value chain.

The successful GSLV-F17 mission therefore represents not only another operational achievement for ISRO but also the broader expansion of India’s capabilities across the space sector.

EOS-05 is an imaging satellite, and its placement in geosynchronous orbit marks a notable addition to India’s earth-observation capabilities. Satellites in such high-altitude orbits can provide sustained coverage of large areas, making them valuable for applications that require regular observation and monitoring.

The GSLV, or Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, is designed to place heavier payloads into geosynchronous transfer orbit and remains an important component of India’s independent launch capability.

Modi, in a post on X, described the successful launch as “yet another outstanding achievement by ISRO and a proud moment for our nation”.

He said the growing partnership between ISRO and Indian industry was “adding new strength and scale” to the space programme and expanding India’s capabilities across the entire space ecosystem.

The emphasis on industry participation is particularly important as India seeks to build a larger domestic space economy. Greater private-sector involvement is expected to complement ISRO’s capabilities and widen the base for innovation, manufacturing and space-based applications.
