NEW DELHI: Strong tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR and several parts of north India on Friday night after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, leaving at least eight people dead, according to local authorities.

The earthquake occurred at around 9.50 p.m., with its epicentre located in Badakhshan province, near the Pakistan-Tajikistan border. Officials said the quake struck at a depth of about 150 km, allowing the tremors to be felt across a wide geographical area.

In India, the impact was reported from multiple cities including New Delhi, Noida, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Srinagar, Poonch, Udhampur and Dehradun, among others. Residents in several areas reported sudden shaking, prompting many to step out of their homes and workplaces as a precaution.

People living in high-rise buildings said the tremors lasted a few seconds but were strong enough to be clearly felt indoors. Some reported movement of household objects such as fans and furniture.

In Afghanistan, authorities confirmed casualties after a house collapsed in Kabul, resulting in eight deaths and injuries to at least one child. Rescue efforts were initiated in affected areas.

The tremors were also felt in parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Punjab province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Peshawar, indicating the wide reach of the seismic activity.

Seismically active, the Hindu Kush region frequently experiences earthquakes due to tectonic activity. Experts note that deeper quakes, such as this one, tend to be felt across larger distances, even if surface-level damage may vary.

While no immediate damage or casualties were reported in India, the tremors caused brief panic, with many residents sharing their experiences on social media.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, though no aftershocks of significant intensity had been reported at the time of writing.
