TEHRI GARHWAL

Nestled on the southern slopes of the outer Himalayas, Tehri Garhwal stands as one of the sacred hilly districts of Uttarakhand State. Legend has it that even before the creation of the universe, Lord Brahma himself meditated on this very land. Muni-ki-Reti and Tapovan are revered as the places where ancient Rishis sought penance. The rugged terrain and limited communication routes have played a crucial role in preserving the district’s rich culture.

The name Tehri Garhwal is a combination of two words – Tehri, derived from the word ‘Trihari’ which symbolizes a place that purifies all three types of sins, and Garh, meaning country fort. In the past, the number of forts a ruler possessed was a measure of their prosperity and power. Prior to 888, Garhwal was divided into small ‘garhs’ ruled by independent kings known as Rana, Rai, or Thakur.

The history of Tehri Garhwal is steeped in tales of conquest and resilience. Prince Kanakpal, hailing from Malwa, married the daughter of the mighty King Bhanu Pratap and eventually extended his empire by conquering all the garhs. For 915 years, the region remained under their control, until the grip of severe famine in 1794-95 and a devastating earthquake in 1883 weakened the region.

As if natural calamities weren’t enough, the Gorkhas began invading the territory, further challenging the resilience of the people. Despite facing adversity, the people of Tehri Garhwal have stood strong, their history a testament to their unwavering spirit. On the contrary, the Gorkhas, whose previous attempts to capture the fort of Langoor Garhi had failed, now found themselves in a position of power. In 1803, they once again invaded the Garhwal region during the reign of King Pradumn Shah. Unfortunately, King Pradumn Shah was killed in the battle in Dehra Dun, leaving his only son, Sudarshan Shah, who was just a child at the time, in a precarious situation. However, thanks to the quick thinking of his trusted courtiers, Sudarshan Shah was saved.

With the Gorkhas emerging victorious in the battle, they established their dominion over the Garhwal region. Their kingdom eventually expanded to Kangara, where they ruled for 12 years before being ousted by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Meanwhile, Sudarshan Shah sought help from the East India Company, ultimately freeing his kingdom from Gorkha rule.

The East India Company then incorporated Kumaon, Dehra Dun, and East Garhwal into the British Empire, while West Garhwal was granted to Sudarshan Shah, forming the Tehri Riyasat.
