Bengaluru: In a significant step towards strengthening public healthcare for women, a new dialysis unit has been inaugurated at the Government Vanivilas Hospital in the city, offering critical support to pregnant women suffering from kidney-related complications.
The initiative has been undertaken by the Bengaluru-based Aahwahan Foundation, a non-profit organisation working towards improving access to healthcare for underprivileged communities. The foundation is led by its Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Braja Kishore Pradhan.

Vanivilas Hospital, one of the city’s prominent government maternity centres, caters largely to patients from economically weaker sections. Until now, the absence of an in-house dialysis facility meant that pregnant women with pre-existing kidney disease had to be referred to other hospitals for treatment — often causing delays and increasing medical risks.
With the commissioning of the new unit, such patients can now receive timely and continuous care within the same hospital, reducing dependence on external referrals. Doctors say this is particularly crucial in managing high-risk pregnancies, where delays in treatment can have serious consequences for both mother and child, said a representative from the Foundation.
By enabling on-site dialysis, the hospital will be better equipped to handle complications arising from conditions such as chronic kidney disease, thereby improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. The move is also expected to reduce logistical challenges faced by patients and their families, including travel and additional medical expenses.
Officials associated with the initiative said the facility would ensure continuity of care, allowing doctors to closely monitor patients throughout pregnancy and delivery. It also strengthens the hospital’s capacity to provide comprehensive maternal healthcare services under one roof.
“Earlier, this hospital did not have a dialysis unit, so patients had to be referred elsewhere for treatment. Now, it ensures timely and life-saving care during pregnancy and delivery without the need for referrals to other hospitals, thereby reducing risks for both mother and child while making treatment more accessible and affordable. Overall, it provides critical support to women requiring specialized care during high-risk pregnancies, offering much-needed relief to low-income patients,” said the representative.
